September is National Preparedness Month. Federal preparedness guidance encourages households to make a plan, build an emergency kit, stay informed, and review how they would leave or shelter at home during an emergency.
A few practical home checks can help:
• Make sure household members can safely open exterior doors and identify more than one way out when possible. • Keep walkways, stairs, and exits clear of stored items and tripping hazards. • Check that flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, water, and basic supplies are easy to find. • Save important home records and take updated photos of your property and belongings. • Review your family communication plan, including an out-of-area contact.
Every home and local risk is different. Start with the basics, follow local emergency instructions, and address repairs that could make access, lighting, or safe movement around the home more difficult.
